Web Development Methodology

back to library

After entering into a contract for web development there are essentially three different steps to completing the project. Some web development firms may have more steps or may detail these steps further; but here is the kind of process you should expect:

Phase One – Specific Interview
A meeting will be held to confirm the web site outline and site features. This interview may also establish a list of responsible agents for information collection, deliveries and timelines. Here you may agree upon the look and feel of the site. If there are data requirements, those may be formalized. A more specific time line may be established and dates for deliverables determined. In addition, there may be a review any existing or theorized Internet marketing plans. Expect to set aside a half-day for this Phase One meeting. All key players and decision makers should be present at this meeting.

Phase Two – Production
During this phase all the information agreed-upon in Phase One will be created in an on-line staging area where the web site will come together. This phase may be sub-divided into several stages of production depending on the size and complexity of the project. The completed web site in the staging area will be tested and bugs will be fixed. Any necessary training will be conducted after testing. This phase requires constant communication as different portions of the web site are being constructed. It is important that decision makers are available throughout this phase as to not delay production and to ensure all project details are incorporated into the project. The length of this phase depends on the complexity and size of the project.

Phase Three – Launch
This phase makes the web site available on the web for the public or intended end user. During the launch period the development team should be available for any latent or overlooked bugs that may have been missed during Phase Two. The launch period typically lasts one-two weeks.
