2005 Holiday Shopping Season

Big Increases Again.
Total holiday spending reached $25 billion, (excluding travel) between October 29 and December 16, the first seven weeks of the 2005 holiday season with only 37 percent of shoppers considered all gifts bought and 10 percent of shoppers had not yet begun to shop - 54 percent said they had finished their shopping. The total accounts for a 25 percent increase for the same period in 2004.
What People Bought.
Apparel accounted for the highest amount of spending with $4.7 billion in sales. Hardware and computer peripherals and consumer electronics each accounted for $3.7 billion in sales.
How They Found Gifts.
Forty-five percent of consumers found their way to online retailers by typing in the URL or following a direct link. Search engines routed additional shoppers. Google accounted for 40.5 percent of searches for online stores; Yahoo! for 20.9 percent.
Satisfaction Rating.
Online shoppers were satisfied with their overall shopping experiences. Seventy-one percent said they were very or somewhat satisfied; only eight percent expressed any level of dissatisfaction with their experiences.
Daily Internet Search Usage
A report released jointly by Pew Internet & American Life Project and comScore finds the percentage of search users almost equal to those who use e-mail.
The search-using population totals 90 percent of all Internet users, a close second to the e-mail-using population of 91 percent of all Internet users. Daily users of search and e-mail combined have grown in the past year. In 2004, 38 million online Americans used search daily,; in 2005, the number of users hit 59 million. That's a 55 percent increase in one year. Goggle gets top usage with near 45% and Yahoo! comes in second with near 25%.
